Five Minutes to Chat

We cancelled our outdoor plans this weekend, and it has been a cozy weekend with the rain and Hurricane Kyle. One question that has occupied our time is this:

If we had five minutes to talk to our dogs, Bromley and Brewer, what would we ask them? What would we say to them?

What a loaded question! Each dog has his own unique personality and idiosyncrasies. We might want to know what the attraction is to eating feces, why one particular patch of grass tastes better than the other… What’s your favorite food, what’s your favorite spot to be rubbed? Does Cesar Milan really know what he’s talking about? Do you understand that Dad is yelling at the Red Sox/Patriots and that he’s not really mad at you?

But I think I’d probably end up with more to say than to ask. I would want Bromley to know how much I have counted on his smell and licks through life’s adventures and challenges of the last 10+ years. I would want Brewer to know that we will rub his tummy for the next 10+ years and never leave him alone in another shelter.

What about you? What would you say with only five minutes to talk to your pet??

Peter Kim - Hey, I know this might sound morbid, but I know exactly what I’d ask. Assuming that I could communicate with my dogs, I assume that they’d also be capable of reasoning, critical thinking, etc. It’s obvious we love them – actions speak louder than words. So I’d want to know, in what situation would they want to be put down. A canine healthcare proxy, so to speak.

Lou - I’d tell Roger that he’s staying with me for good, he’s never going back to the shelter. I’d ask what his favorite treats, games, and adventures have been, and I’d beg him to stop scratching the door casing in my room!!

Stephen - I think I’d ask my two dogs if they were happy! And if we were being good, responsible care-takers to them. Then I’d ask my boy dog how he sits still so long when my 4 year old daughter is dressing him up in her doll clothes!
