The kids were great sports about having their pictures taken. We walked along the beach for a bit – short on time but not short on smiles!

It’s easy to see where they get their good looks! We captured a few shots of Lisa around home for potential use in her professional work.

One of my favorite things about photographing humans is giving them a more natural, environmental collection of images that they won’t have from a mall studio. You know that blue background, pillows that aren’t yours, awkward props… It means a lot to me that I’m able to capture natural expression and movement, in a location that’s more “you”.

We had a windy day and some issues with sun-squinting – things that make me consider working with an assistant more and more. The other hilarious trouble we had was that the dogs wouldn’t stay in the photo when we wanted them, and wouldn’t get out of the frame when we didn’t want them! As is required for the job, we just went with the flow and I kept snapping away!

A dear friend of mine had a beautiful baby girl, Hayley, eight weeks ago. Friends know I’m not a “kid-person”, per se, but I must admit it’s pretty fun to photograph any creature you can’t possibly have control over. We just sat on the bed or in the grass and watched her personality shine! Of course Hayley has two furry siblings, Crosby & Millie, who got their fair share of ear-scratches as well.

I hope you’ll forgive me when you see this:

It turns out human babies require some behind-the-scenes poking n’ prodding as well. That smile just can’t come that easy – and the smell of bacon didn’t seem to have the same effect that it has on dogs.

Trina, it was wonderful catching up with you and meeting your little girl! I’m so happy for you and Aaron – and the pups – on this new adventure!

The kids were full of character, patiently running, dancing and swinging in the back yard during each family photo. I found myself turning and switching settings to snap a photo of them often.

It sounds like this haze usually burns off mid-morning to reveal a beautiful glimpse of the ocean, but at 7:30am the haze also acts as the best light diffuser.

Of course there were dogs there too – three to be exact!
